One of the first reasons I began eating organic was because of the pesticides in food, but quickly learned that they also taste a lot better too. I find that the people who grow the organic food take more pride in their work which gives the food a better energy. If you’re not eating organic, it’s pretty hard to avoid pesticides in the food, but with a little help from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) list of good and bad foods, you can avoid the chemicals as much as possible.
The EWG always recommends organic produce choices. For those that are not able to source it out, here is their list of the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Dozen
According to their Shoppers Guide to Pesticides, the EWG tells us that those who eat the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables consume an average of 10 pesticides a day compared to 2 for those who eat conventionally grown produce.
Pesticides are toxic.
The Environmental Working Group has a downloadable PDF with more information as well as a new iPhone app so you can carry the shoppers guide to pesticides with you when you’re out.
If the dirty dozen include any of your favorite foods, I suggest you at least source out cleaner versions of them.
Avoiding the pesticides in food is but one reason to eat organic, but it’s a real compelling one. Personally? I find the taste of organic to be much better and the price of organic to conventional really is comparable.
Dr Joel fuhrman has a new 2 set book out entitled "Eat For Health" available at Amazon for $46. It's a two book set, part one being about the mind makeover and part two being the body makeover. His first book Eat To Live is a fantastic read that I recommend to anyone.
I'm looking forward to the new two book set and have it in my shopping cart right now.
Tonja R. Nansel, PhD has this to say about Eat For Health:
Dr. Fuhrman's nutritional prescription is a greatly-needed antidote to the US way of eating which has become a leading cause of disease and premature death. Despite all the sophisticated medical technology available today, the sobering truth is that the greatest tools for preventing and reversing disease are your fork and spoon. This way of eating will greatly benefit those in poor health as well as healthy persons desiring optimal wellness and vitality. Further, unlike most weight-loss approaches based on will-power and difficult to sustain, Dr. Fuhrman's approach corrects the underlying causes of excessive hunger and cravings, resulting in permanent, naturally-occurring weight loss. I have had the privilege of personally seeing the tremendous disease reversal that occurs with this way of eating, and whole-heartedly recommend this book.
France Takes a Stand Against GM foods - They BAN it
PARIS, March 19 (Reuters) - France's top legal authority on Wednesday upheld a government decision to ban commercial use of the only genetically modified (GM) crop grown in the country by rejecting an emergency injunction filed by the pro-GM camp.
France issued decrees banning the use of MON 810 maize seeds in February after a government-appointed committee said it unearthed new evidence of damage GM products could inflict on the environment.
Ecologists and ordinary consumers hailed the ruling, but seedmakers, including MON 810 creator Monsanto, and maize farmers lodged an emergency injunction in an attempt to overturn the ban.
[Rob's Note: why would a fat loss expert be bringing genetically modified food stories to your attention rather than info about exercise or weight loss? because it's all about food really. Messing with what mother nature provided for us is just asking for trouble.]
As you can tell from the recent videos, I'm spending my day watching health related content. David Wolfe was a recent speaker at Harv Eker's Extreme Health event and shares some of his thoughts on raw foods here in this video.
This is a trailer of a movie called Raw For 30 Days which I've never heard about, but I'm sure David Wolfe is involved.
A great quote from one of the participants after having reversed diabetes herself was:
I don't know why the doctors don't know about this!
Raw For 30 Days
by the fourth day they were off insulin completely by the end of the 30 days their blood sugar had stabilized and they have effectively reversed their diabetes
"Raw For 30 Days" is an independent documentary film that chronicles six McDonald's-munching Americans with diabetes who switch to a diet consisting entirely of vegan, organic, live, raw foods in order to reverse diabetes naturally. The six participants are challenged to give up meat, dairy, sugar, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, soda, junk food, fast food, processed food, packaged food, and even cooked food – as well as go without their loved ones and many of their creature comforts – for 30 days.
Visit Raw For 30 Days, buy the dvd and support the project in getting the word out about reversing diabetes (at the very least).
At the end of the trailer of raw for 30 days, viewers are told that Woody Harrelson would be contributing an interview for the full length movie. Here is a clip of that interview with Woody.
Got this little tidbit about all the little baddies that are on our lemon slices at restaurants from Mercola. Imagine the cook or staff going to the toilet, taking a shit, and then finishing the next order of hot water with lemon with their bare hands!
Pardon me - Bowel movement I mean.
Two out of every three restaurant lemon wedges tested in a study were covered in disease-causing bacteria -- including fecal bacteria. A total of 25 different, and potentially dangerous, microorganisms were discovered on the wedges.
The Journal of Environmental Health offers sources for the contamination:
It is not possible to definitively identify the origins of the microorganisms. While the Enterobacteriaceae and nonfermentative Gramnegative bacilli could have come from the fingertips of a restaurant employee via human fecal or raw-meat or poultry contamination, they might have contaminated the lemons before they even arrived at the restaurant.
When I'm out, I order hot water and lemon, and then steep my own Sunrider Calli tea. I'm going to skip the lemon from here on out.
Want to know how many cheeseburgers you'd have to eat before they start doing damage to your body? The answer, according to a review of new dietary research, is just one. Just one high-fat, high-sugar meal can trigger a biochemical cascade, causing inflammation of blood vessels and immediate, detrimental changes to the nervous system, according to the paper, published this week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. And just one healthy meal helps return your body to its optimal state. "Your health and vigor, at a very basic level, are as good as your last meal," says lead author James O'Keefe, head of preventive cardiology at the Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Mo.
What happens when you eat, is that the food is digested into the various nutrients, amino acids (building blocks of protein), sugar and fat. If your last meal happens to be junk food, the rush in sugar causes a huge spike in your blood sugar leading to various short term conditions such as blood vessel constriction, tissue inflammation and free radical's that can damage all your cells.
The opposite is true as well.
Your health can be restored as quickly as the next meal. Make it a meal of lean meat, green vegetables, legumes, whole grains, sugar and salt free and things begin to reverse.
I'm not sure if you've noticed this effect after eating junk food, but I certainly have. Feeling good is as simple as eating a new meal of good healthy green foods.
The article in Time continues...
Regardless of its benefits, healthy food can leave you feeling unsatisfied if you're used to eating junk. Junk food distorts a person's hormonal profile, says O'Keefe.
"The more you eat it the more you crave it. It becomes a vicious cycle"
Just as we can be addicted to pop, coffee and cigarettes, Junk food can leave us feeling a way that we get used to. Making the switch to a healthier diet may take some adjustments and the need to overcome the "trick of the tongue". Good food may not taste so appealing in the first few bites, but your body will become accustomed to how much better you feel soon enough.
Could our focus on health be undermining the very fabric of our world? Listen for the Key Moment: Listen this week as Doctor Tom, Director of the Nutrition Treatment Center, and I present the antidote to "health."
I'll tell you, this caught my attention and after listening to it for the first minute, I was becoming quite opposed to Shawn's position thinking "what the hell is he talking about?"
however, when it comes right down to it, I agree with his position. It's not just about focusing on health, but also on his other "secret ingredient" to fully complete the picture.
