My Health and Fitness Library
These are the books that I read along my journey down from 475 to a lowest weight of 187 and now a lean 225. They were instrumental in my evolution from a Fat Guy to
the man I am today, the Former Fat Guy. People ask about why I decided to lose 300 pounds. I didn't. I decided to do something about my health. I began to read and then apply the things I read.
I am the result of where my reading, learning and applying the principles has taken me.
Prescription Free Cholesterol Cure
Frank Mangano discovered a proven method to lowering your high cholesterol in an all-natural way. Using his prescription free method,
you can lower high cholesterol…and do it naturally.
Frank isn't a doctor, but rather a hardcore researcher. He finds solutions for people, especially those close to him.
It all started with his mother who had high cholesterol. Since she didn't want to begin taking a statin, or prescription strength
cholesterol lowering drug due to her fear of side effects, she turned to Frank for help. He buried his nose in all the medical books,
reports, and articles he could find to discover a way for her to lower her cholesterol.
And the hard work paid off. What he gave his mother was a plan based on hard science that allowed her to lower her cholesterol
without drugs. Her cholesterol dropped 40 points with his all-natural system. This kind of result normally leaves doctors slack-jawed
at the amazing results.
Frank came up with the 60 Day Prescription Free Cholesterol Cure and in it, he teaches more than you'll probably ever learn from
your doctor. His Natural Health book is helping people lower cholesterol all over the world and it's exhaustive research brings
you only the facts based on science.

Eating For Life by Bill Phillips
Bill Phillips, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Body-for-LIFE, believes your answer to all of the above questions should be, "Yes!" He feels that food should be a source of pure pleasure. A source of positive, abundant energy! A "sure thing" in a world of much uncertainty.
Phillips, who's widely regarded as today's most successful fitness author, has firm beliefs which go against the grain of today's popular weight-loss methods. "Diets, all of them, are potentially dangerous, most always dumb and ultimately a dead-end street!" he insists. "Eventually, anyone and everyone who's at all concerned with their health must learn how to feed their body, not how to starve it."
Instead, Phillips encourages a safe and sound solution which includes eating balanced, nutrient-rich meals, frequently throughout the day. "This is what works in the long run," he explains.
Rich with common sense and science, Eating for Life has rhyme and reason. It is specific. There are very clear dos and don'ts which help people enjoy food and improve their overall fitness.
Bill's approach, which he calls the "Eating for Lifestyle," has already helped thousands of people break free from the dieting dilemma and discover that, contrary to pop-culture belief, food is friend, not foe. Used intelligently, it nourishes the body and mind, satisfies the appetite, calms cravings, renews health and lifts energy.
Like Bill Phillips' Body-for-LIFE, this is a tell-it-like-it-is book. There's no promise of a quick fix. No metabolic tricks or so-called miracles. Just straightforward, clear, concise, practical and appropriate principles for eating right... for life.
I interviewed Bill's brother Shawn Phillips on my Fitness Talk Radio show. Shawn (the brother) has a great book called "ABSolution" which I recommend also.
Fit For Life by Harvey and Marilynn Diamond
"It is not only what you eat that makes the difference, but also of extreme
importance is when you eat it and in what combinations," say Harvey and Marilyn
Diamond, authors of this classic bestseller. Their program results in eating
balanced, nutritious, high-fiber foods, making dieting "unnecessary and as
obsolete as sealing wax."
The Diamonds explain that body functions have a daily cycle: noon to 8 p.m.--
appropriation (eating and digestion); 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.--assimilation (absorption
and use); 4 a.m. to noon--elimination (of body wastes and food debris). Fit
for Life aims to return you to a lifestyle based on your natural body
cycles. That means 70 percent of your diet should be "high-water-content
foods"--fruits and vegetables--which facilitate all body functions. Consume
nothing but fruit or fruit juice until noon, then eat salad and vegetables with
every meal for the rest of the day.
Two-thirds of the book is explanation and discussion; one-third is menu plans
and recipes. You won't be hungry, your food choices will be healthy, and you'll
lose weight without dieting.
I described Fit For Life as being the book that "woke me up" to what the body was all about and how the body "uses" food.
Fit For Life 2 - Living Health by Harvey and Marilynn Diamond
Part 2 expands greatly on the natural health theme expanding into exercise, air, good people, clean water etc.
I quit smoking because of what I read about it's effect on the body in Fit For Life 2
History of Natural Hygiene and Principles of Natural Hygiene
Herbert M. Shelton, who ran a health school between 1928 and 1981, is the most respected and knowledgeable Natural Hygienist of recent times.
In this book he explains the teachings of other Natural Natural Hygienists over the last 200 years. This book serves to provide credit for these original pioneers and their writings.
The Natural Hygiene movement, which started in 1830, uses the basic laws of nature to find the best diet for humans. The movement gave rise to veganism in the 1970's and some 5 star Natural Hygiene lifestyle books, such as Harvey and Marilyn Diamond's Fit for Life series in the 1980's.
By following the Natural Hygiene principles you will discover that your body is a self-maintaining and self-healing system who's natural lifespan is between 120 to 150 years old. These detoxifying principles are also a key starting point on the path to enlightenment, spiritual awareness and following your destiny in life.
A keen student of the principles was Gandhi, who was always experimenting with his diet (see his autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth). In his later years he finally became a fruitarian, the ultimate holistic diet.
Natural Hygiene is food combining. The terms are interchangeable.

Perfect Health by Deepak Chopra
Perfect Health has become my bible when I coach people based on their body types. This book is on my desk right now and almost always is.
A decade ago, Deepak Chopra, M.D., wrote Perfect Health, the first practical guide to harnessing the healing power of the mind, which became a national bestseller. The book described how breakthroughs in physics and medicine were underscoring the validity of a 5,000-year-old medical system from ancient India known as Ayurveda ("the knowledge of life span" in Sanskrit). Perfect Health went on to describe how to apply the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda to everyday life. In celebration of this classic work we have created this new edition, revised and updated to include the latest medical research.
Although we experience our bodies as solid, they are in fact more like fires that are constantly being consumed and renewed. We grow new stomach linings every five days, for instance. Our skin is new every five weeks. Each year, fully 98 percent of the total number of atoms in our bodies is replaced. Ayurveda gives us the tools to intervene at this quantum level, where we are being created anew each day. Ayurveda tells us that freedom from sickness depends on contacting our own awareness, bringing it into balance, and then extending that balance to the body.
Perfect Health provides a complete step-by-step program of mind body medicine tailored to individual needs. A quiz identifies the reader's mind body type: thin, restless Vata; enterprising, efficient Pitta; tranquil, steady Kapha; or any combination of these three. This body type becomes the basis for a specific Ayurvedic program of diet, stress reduction, neuromuscular integration, exercise, and daily routines. The result is a total plan, tailor-made for each individual, to reestablish the body's essential balance with nature; to strengthen the mind body connection; and to use the power of quantum healing to transcend the ordinary limitations of disease and aging--in short, for achieving .
Diet for a New America by John Robbins
I saw John in person in Calgary shortly after I read this book. I became vegetarian because of this book and continued that practice
for 12 years of which I was strictly Vegan for 2. When I got my Fitness Interviews Talk Radio show, John
was on the initial line up. I got a call from him personally when he had to cancel the night before due to an emergency meeting in which he was being asked to chair a new board. Diet for a New America was a turning point in my life and my health.
From John Robbins, a new edition of the classic that awakened the conscience of
a nation. Since the 1987 publication of Diet for a New America, beef
consumption in the United States has fallen a remarkable 19%. While many forces
are contributing to this dramatic shift in our habits,Diet for a New America is considered to be one of the most important.
Diet for a New America is a startling examination of the food we currently buy and eat in
the United States, and the astounding moral, economic, and emotional price we
pay for it.
In Section I, John Robbins takes an extraordinary look at our dependence on
animals for food and the inhumane conditions under which these animals are
raised. It becomes clear that the price we pay for our eating habits is measured
in the suffering of animals, a suffering so extreme and needless that it
disrupts our very place in the web of life.
Section II challenges the belief that consuming meat is a requirement for
health by pointing our the vastly increased rate of disease caused by
pesticides, hormones, additives, and other chemicals now a routine part of our
food production. The author shows us that the high health risk is unnecessary,
and that the production, preparation, and consumption of food can once again be
a healthy process.
In Section III, Robbins looks at the global implications of a meat-based diet
and concludes that the consumption of the resources necessary to produce meat is
a major factor in our ecological crisis.
Diet for a New America is the single most eloquent argument for a
vegetarian lifestyle ever published. Eloquently, evocatively, and entertainingly
written, it is a cant put down book guaranteed to amaze, infuriate, but
ultimately educate and empower the reader. A pivotal book nominated for the
Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction in 1987.
Fat Wars by Brad King
Fat Wars marked another turning point in my body fat levels. I learned so much from Brad and
especially about the role protein plays in our diet, our ability to become lean and I also learned about the Glycemic Index. I was so
impressed by the information that I asked Brad for an interview on my Fitness Interviews Talk Radio show
where I have interviews of bodybuilders, fitness personalities and nutriton advisors.
Listen to the Brad King interview here and my page on fat wars here.
From the back cover of the book:

forever, and so far, so good.

Core Performance : The Revolutionary Workout Program to Transform
Your Body and Your Life
by Mark Verstegen
Core Performance is the first program that delivers strength
and muscle mass, endurance and a lean body, balance and flexibility, athletic quickness and power--all in less than an
hour a day. How? By giving you a personal coach who has worked with some of the most famous and successful athletes in
the world today.
Mark Verstegen, owner of Athletes' Performance in Tempe, Arizona, and Carson, California, has trained the best of the best: Nomar Garciaparra. Mia Hamm. Roberto Alomar. Mary Pierce. When Verstegen trains an athlete, millions of dollars in salary and signing bonuses are at stake. Bottom line: If he didn't deliver, he'd be out of business. And he's busier than ever.
What works for these gifted athletes will work for you. Sure, you can't do as much exercise as they do, but you don't need to. It takes less than an hour a day to build the type of fitness that improves your life in almost every way. You can straighten your posture, eliminate aches and pains, sleep better, and approach everything you do with more vigor and a better attitude.
Sure, you will get bigger muscles, a tighter waist, and more strength and power. But the biggest benefits come from the inside. The intense focus on the muscles of your core--abdominals, lower back, hips, and thighs--will help you stand taller and prevent the back pain from which most people eventually suffer. The detailed nutrition section guarantees that you'll feed your muscles, starve your fat, and get boundless energy when you need it most. And the attention you'll pay to recovery from your workouts will give you a straight path to the results you want.
When I began with my Personal Trainer in Febuary of 2004, she put me on a core based training program. Up until that point I had done all my exercise routines
on benches and using equipment. I had done 1/2 and hour of ab work 3x a week, sometimes more. The switch to core based training has made me stronger, increased my lifts and eliminated any lingering back pain I had from the abdominal work. My Trainer
forbids me to do crunches. Exercise balls and Bosu's are my new best friend.
