1: Quick Intro:
Hello Everyone
I just got back from hiking Canada's West Coast Trail
on the west coast of Canada's Vancouver Island. It
was an amazing experience. I spent 8 days hiking the
75KM trail (46.5 miles). I did the hike in 7 days but
took a day at the last campsite to just rest and
relax. I'm working on the pictures and trip diary so
it will be available on my web site shortly.
I weighed myself and did a body fat assessment before
I left and I'm happy to announce that I dropped 2% bf
during the ten days I was away. Yay!
To carry all the food necessary for the trail, I had
to resort to dehydrated foods. I'm so thankful I had
Sunrider live food formulas to compensate for the
trail food. There was once place on the third day
that we were able to buy a meal (read my trip story
for details), and I was stunned to see fresh fruit.
I bought four nectarines at $2 apiece. They were
probably the best tasting fruit I'd had all summer.
I started a six week boot camp that my fitness club is
putting on here in Edmonton on Monday. It's six weeks
of 1.5 hours 3x a week training on Mon, Wed and Fri
based on the Navy Seals training program (loosely
based they say). Running, drills, sprinting, running
stairs pushups, pull ups, and core work. Now I do
cardio, but have always limited it to 30 minutes and
never at 6am.
This first week has been to test us and set our
baseline performance levels. We're to set our own
goals for improvement. My goals are to drop another
2% body fat during the six weeks and to increase my
pushups / pull ups etc, but mainly to just keep moving
during the running and to drop the 2% body fat.
I'll let you know how it goes. Watch my web site blog
for weekly updates on it

2.The Journey Through the Digestive System
The Process of Sickness
To start with, we have to understand a few concepts:
1) We have to humble ourselves to the point where we
can admit that cultures like the Chinese were
researching the human body several thousand years
before the rest of the world. In North America we
don’t really know anything about health in comparison!
Treating disease, yes; but not about creating
wellness.
2) The body has the ability to heal itself. Example:
when we become injured we expect to heal. Why is it
that some people heal better than others? Is it
because some people’s bodies don’t know how? Mmmm no!
3) Our body requires raw materials to function and
repair itself. What foods give us vitality and what
foods drain us of vitality? Well, believe it or not,
there are tests that can be done to determine your
food sensitivities. Contact me for info about that.
4) It is up to us to take responsibility for our
health. If we catch ourselves saying "once I’m on X
medication, I'll be okay" or "once I have my
operation, I'll be okay" or how about "we can get
cancer from anything these days so I’m going to eat
what I want;" "everyone in my family eventually
becomes pear shaped, or gets that health problem, and
so will I". If we think like that, we are obviously
not taking responsibility and most likely letting
others influence us or make our health decisions for
us. There are people that are experts at helping the
body heal it self and experts at manipulating the body
systems with chemicals or drugs. I don’t talk to my
mechanic about my home computer. We may need the
medication or the operation but then what? What caused
the problem to begin with, and what will stop more
problems from surfacing?
Creating wellness is much simpler than most people
think. In the west, we try to dissect everything into
separate systems and then attempt to be the chemist
for the human body. How can we really expect wellness
from this method? The Chinese, on the other hand,
experimented for 5,000 years with 40,000 plants. They
established what foods were on the shopping list of
the body systems, so to speak. This allowed them to
nourish, balance, and cleanse the body so it could
create an environment where illness couldn't exist.
Today, beside the fact that it is difficult to find
adequate nutrition to nourish, balance, and cleanse
the body, we also have to deal with the nine stomach
busters.
The following explanation will help you understand:
The Nine Stomach Busters:
* Sugar
* Salt
* Chocolate
* Coffee
* Regular Tea
* Smoking
* Preservatives
* Artificial Sweeteners
* Alcohol
In a healthy stomach, there is a good amount of acid
and a thick layer of mucous to protect the stomach
from the acid.
Most problems start with the nine stomach busters, you
know the ones. Yes, the ones that you try to kid
yourself that a little or a lot is okay. I know, I
know your grandfather did them everyday and lived to
be 173 years old, and so that means you can too.
Right? Mmmm no. That is a seminar in itself but in
short, the damage we do to our body at the cellular
level (diet, lack of nutrition, stress etc) is passed
on to our offspring and the quality of our diet has
deteriorated steadily over the last 50 years.
It Starts with Poor Digestion
It has been established that many children as young as
8 years of age have consumed enough of one or more of
the stomach busters to greatly reduce the stomach’s
ability to digest. This is because of low digestive
enzymes (stomach acid). If we want to argue this
point, just ask yourself how your stomach feels after
having a good helping of any of the busters.
For those of you who are saying "I don’t do any of
those", I bet you did when you were younger and you
probably still have at least one; it doesn't take much
to keep the digestion weak. By age 40, most adults are
suffering from very poor digestion. They often think
they have great digestion because they have bowel
movements, but that doesn't mean much.
Low digestive enzyme (stomach acid) can create
several health challenges. The first one that comes
to mind, is what would seem like an over acid
stomach. The stomach protects itself from the acid
with a layer of mucous. The less acid your stomach
produces, the less mucous that is produced. Why would
the stomach make a lot of mucous for protection when
there is very little acid?
When the stomach is weak and we consume any of the
stomach busters or other acidic foods, our acid level
goes up.
There isn't enough mucous to protect the stomach wall
from the acid so it becomes irritated and spasms
(tightens), squeezing the acid up into the esophagus
where there is no mucous. We experience burning
because there is no mucous to protect the esophagus
and turn to something to kill the acid. If this
continues for long enough, we can develop a hiatus
hernia.
Other problems created by poor digestion are food
allergies. An allergy specialist will tell you that
it’s almost always the protein in the food that our
body reacts to and is the hardest to break down. If
undigested, these particles of undigested protein
(protein chains) pass into the small intestine where
we absorb our nutrients into our liver. If we absorb
undigested proteins into the liver, it is like sucking
the corner of the rug into the power head of the
vacuum. Our liver absorbs a chunk of protein, when it
was supposed to be emulsified by the acid. The body
reacts to this by breaking out in boils, headaches,
rashes or in extreme cases the throat can swell or
close right off. The cause of most food allergies is
the inability to break down the proteins and that
takes acid.
The next phase is the journey into the large
intestine. The more undigested fats and proteins there
are coming from the stomach and lack of fiber, the
more sluggish things get. I call it the trash
compactor syndrome. We all know how garbage smells
after a few days. Well, many people have matter in
their digestive tract that has been there for years,
yes years. Eeek!! The colon can stretch up to 10
inches across of solid waste. It may have a hole the
size of a pencil in the middle in which matter flows.
Many people go a week or more between bowel movements.
There are 78 chemicals produced from the rotting
matter. Do you remember the movie Blazing Saddles? The
cowboys were sitting around the fire burning their own
gas (farts)? It’s funny how many people have witnessed
this personally at one time or another in their life.
It burns a bright blue flame. A combination of methane
gas, alcohol and the other 76 chemicals produced in
your colon from fermentation. Eating fruit or desert
shortly after eating protein can also do this. It
creates fermentation because it triples digestion
time. This is explained on my web site under food
combining at:
http://www.formerfatguy.com/food-combine.asp
These gasses are not all vented off into the
atmosphere, they are also absorbed into the liver. The
liver then makes bile out of these toxic chemicals
once it has neutralized them. Don’t relax yet. The
liver can easily become overrun with this toxicity
along with the toxicity from the stomach busters. If
this happens, the bile becomes toxic or hot and that
causes problems with the gall bladder because bile is
stored there, irritating it. Next the toxic bile
starts destroying the inner lining of the small and
large intestines causing conditions like colitis,
Crohn’s disease, ileitis, spastic bowel, duodenum
ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome.
Now that the liver is toxic, it also starts allowing
toxicity to flow into the blood stream causing
problems such as rashes, headaches, poor mental
clarity, arthritis, and low energy to name a few.
Also, when the liver is struggling, often so are our
moods.
The next filter is the kidneys which can't help too
much with this type of toxicity. The kidney’s job is
to clean up uric acid. If your kidneys are overloaded,
you will find yourself retaining fluid. This type of
toxicity makes your eyes turn yellow, and your joints
ache.
The last filter is the lymph system, with the spleen
at the tail end. The lymph system is filtering the
whole time and can hold a lot of garbage, but many
problems start to surface such as lumps on the neck
and breasts, swollen tonsils, and breast cancer to
name a few.
(Harvey Diamond, of Fit For Life is convinced that
a healthy lymph system can eliminate all the
sources of disease. I have an article on my
web site about this at:
http://www.formerfatguy.com/articles/harvey-diamond.asp
)
When the spleen can't hold anymore garbage, we are in
trouble. If the toxicity flows past the spleen, it
starts attacking our nerves and muscles. Also, as the
spleen loses it’s ability to function properly because
of the overload, it can start giving the T-cells
(immune system fighter cells) the wrong messages. They
can be instructed to attack parts of your body instead
of foreign cells. You really don’t want that to
happen.
You could experience tremors or shaking, your muscles
could start to ache everywhere or you could start to
lose feeling. You could lose motor function in parts
of your body which can stop you from being able to
move or control parts of your body. Your knuckles
could hurt and become swollen. There are so many
symptoms for this and the conditions are called
degenerative nerve diseases or names like
Fibromyalgia, MS, MD and Rheumatoid arthritis to name
a few.
We are led to believe that each disease is totally
different from each other. It would make more sense to
believe that everyone has a weak area and that seems
to be the area where the disease shows up.
Reversing the Problem
A lot of people ask me what they can do about their
health problems, and I tell them that there is no drug
or pill or potion that will fix them. However, their
body would love to fix itself, if they will create the
right environment. Think about it this way:
- If we want the spleen to work better, we could try
to find a pill for that, but better yet, lets go back
a step and get the liver working better. That will
give the spleen a break.
- There are lots of liver cleanses but if we don’t
clean the colon and cut down on, if not eliminate the
stomach busters, the liver will just get overloaded
again with toxins from the colon and the busters.
- There are lots of colon cleanses but if your
digestion doesn't improve the colon will become
sluggish and start fermenting again.
-We can do things to help the digestive system
function properly, but without removing the nine
stomach busters, the stomach will remain weak.
Basically we need to clean up the diet and at the same
time add in foods that will nourish, balance and
cleanse the body systems so they can start to
function.
Five main issues:
1) Get started on the Basic Program from Sunrider. You
can send an email to basicprogram@getresponse.com for
more information about this.
2) Get rid of the stomach busters (The Basic Program
will help a lot)
3) Cleanse the colon (Basic program).
4) Cleanse the body of toxicity, especially the liver
and lymph system (Basic Program).
5) Have a food sensitivity test done to make sure you
are eating regular foods that you can digest and that
give you vitality and not take it away. Contact me
about having the food sensitivity testing done.
The Sunrider Basic program will support the body in
all these areas. I haven't found anything that is as
effective and complete either. I have found that if
people try to do this on their own, without the
Sunrider foods, they find it very difficult cutting
back or eliminating the stomach busters. Another
problem is finding "system specific" food to
strengthen and build the body systems. Many will try a
lot of things but in the end, Sunrider foods make the
whole process achievable and realistic.
Last month I talked about how important I thought the
digestive system is to all aspects of our health and
that when anyone speaks to me about w e ight loss, the
first thing we talk about is digestion.
Digestion is the key to your health. Without a good
digestive system, nothing else that you try to do will
work properly. I don't care what sort of program
you're on or think you're on, it all comes down to the
effectiveness of your digestive system.
Digestion is the key to
* weight management
* fitness
* regeneration
* stress relief
* better sleep

3: Top 10 health benefits of weight training
By Sherri McMillan

If it's not enough for you that weight training can
improve your posture, increase your agility and help
you perform better in your favorite sports and
activities, maybe these health benefits will convince
you.
1. Weight training can raise your resting metabolic
rate, which makes it easier to lose weight.
2. Strength training can improve your blood lipid
levels; good news for those with high cholesterol.
3. Weight training can reduce arthritic pain.
4. Two months of strength exercise can increase your
lean tissue weight, helping to reduce your percentage
of body fat.
5. Two months of strength exercise can reduce your
blood pressure.
6. Ten weeks of specific weight training can reduce
lower back pain.
7. Three months of strength training can help you lose
fat weight while eating up to 15 per cent more
calories.
8. Three months of strength training increases the
time in which digested substances pass through the
body, which is important for reducing your risk for
colon cancer.
9. Four months of weight training boosts bone mineral
density, which reduces your risk for osteoporosis.
10. Four months of strength exercise increases your
body's ability to absorb and store glucose, which
helps lower your risk for developing adult-onset
diabetes.
Rob's note:
-----------
Anyone who goes on a calorie restricted
diet loses weight, the problem is that it's almost
always muscle and water weight, not fat. You have to
ask yourself "what kind of weight do I want to drop",
not "lose" and make sure it's fat.
The most effective weight management plan is to
improve your digestion through a proper food program
and to combine that with an exercise program that uses
both cardio and resistance training. By exercising
while you change your diet, you get to keep the muscle
and possibly build more while burning the fat.
------------------------------------------------------
Quit Drinking Coffee and Tea...
For those eliminating or wanting to eliminate coffee
or tea from your diet, I recommend a whole food
beverage offered by Sunrider called Calli. Shao-lin
temple priests ate this formula of whole food herbs
as a salad for it's ability to improve mental clarity
and improved concentration.
Now available in a concentrated whole food beverage,
Calli is alkaline in nature and has less caffeine than
a carrot.
Calli can aid digestion and by it's alkaline nature,
less impurities are likely to be absorbed or retained
from normal digestion.

4: Thanks:
Over the next month I'm going to Salmon Arm British
Columbia to visit some friends and new Sunriders. I'm
joining our Edmonton's "White Water Paddlers" to learn
kayaking which I've wanted to for a long time and if
the weather stays good I'll even get in some parachute
jumps. I've had that goal for a number of years now
and want to finally act on it whether or not I have
anyone to go with.
Until Next Issue,
Thanks for reading.
Namaste,
Rob Cooper.
