Free Downloads and Diet Resources
Here are a few training and nutrition programs you may find interesting. Most are shareware and free to use with
minor restrictions. They can prove very useful when creating recipes and tracking your progress.
Food Composition Database (1.5 Meg. zipped)
Food Composition is a nutrition database with information derived from Release 12 of the USDA abbreviated database.
It contains 5,975 entries -- including popular prepared foods such as Banquet frozen dinners, Betty Crocker's Hamburger
Helper, and Pillsbury Chocolate Chip Cookie dough. Select the food item, serving size, and number of servings to view the
31 components and nutrients, fat content, and more. Food Composition is designed to analyze food components only: you can't
select items to build meal information. If you want to plan menus, a separate program, Heart Smart Menu Planner, works in
conjunction with this database.
Nutribase (3.0 Meg. zipped)
NutriBase SR13 Navigator is a free, downloadable software package that provides convenient access to the entire
USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 13. If you haven't used NutriBase before, this free download
will show you how quick and easy it is to use the NutriBase data search and retrieval mechanism. We took the contents
of the USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 13 and integrated the same NutriBase search and retrieval
mechanism used in our consumer and professional software products to enable quick, easy, and revealing insight into
the world's most respected nutrient database. With NutriBase SR13 Navigator, you can perform food name (or partial
food name) searches. You can View, Rank, or Query the nutrient database. You can use it to count calories or track
the values for any nutrient desired. You can quickly list all the good sources (or bad sources) for any nutrient,
ranked from high-to-low or from low-to-high. You can even conduct full-fledged Boolean AND searches across the data
if desired.
Converson Buddy (942K zipped)
A handy program that converts any measurement into another. I use it to convert grams into ounces and pounds.
