WOW! Awesome job Joe! After being over 400 pounds for over 18 years, I got on the scales Christmas week 2008 and they said 493. I had medical issues and was losing out on life! I became determined, joined Medi-Weightloss Clinics (medically supervised weightloss program that features lean protein and low carbs) and started exercising (cardio and resistance). In 16 months I lost 300 pounds and in 22 months I ran my first half marathon. I have been maintaining now for 18 months and have switched to outdoor cycling. On October 1st, 2011 I rode in my first 100k in Plano, Texas for Make-A-Wish. It feels great to have my life back! Your article on the almonds is spot on! Keep up the great work!

i am 326 pounds and diabetic. i want to loose weight at 190 pounds but my left leg has partial ACL and dont know what to do since it bothers me by popping when I walk or do certain movements sideways. doctor said that i could go on living if it did not bother me but had to loose weight. i eat alot outside, about four meals a day, lots of meat, zero exercise but also would like to add more power and vigor to my intimate life, especially with woman i might like and date my. i was at 350 pounds in june but i think my weight is due to going to eat less outside. oh, i also like to drink alot of of sweets, especially diet soda. if eat outside, i eat mexican food, carl junior, mcdonalds, little ceaser pizza and subway.
i honestly think writing down where I eat helps me keep an honest mindset to set my goals and loose weight.
any suggestions from anyone are welcome. and I like the pictures about phase changes you had in your life. i do have questions about the saggy skin phase one has to go to when loosing weight also. I have stretch marks around the arms, legs and waist. what happens as you loose the weight there? do they dissapear if you loose weight and refill the empty space later with muscle?

Do you know how to judge the quality of green tea? Where is the best place to buy it for optimal nutrient composition?

Kombucha by design has only 5% of the sugar left in it. Spread out over a gallon, that's not very much.

The yeast converts the sugar to alcohol and the bacteria then convert the alcohol to kombucha.

slightly sweetened Kombucha is simply taken out of production a little earlier in the cycle.

Currently, I'm brewing for 11 and 22 days and leaning more towards the 22 days.

Hi Rob,
Great information! I'm brewing a batch of kombucha right now. I prefer kombucha that is lightly sweetened. You might have some insight on this - how do you make sure that the residual sugar level is low?

@Danny Dave, no Kombucha is completely different from Kefir (Tibicos). Similar in that it's fermented, but a different culture and different format of fermentation.

Great article and I was hoping you could maybe provide me with some advise.
I have a high water throughput. I'm a big guy currently weigh about 120KG/264lbs/18st,12lb. Which according to the equation above would mean I should drink just shy of 4 litres of water a day. Which I do easily most days. My problem is in endurance training. Yesterday for example I went jogging for an hour and then cycling for appor0x 4 hours. my total water consumption was 9 litres over the 5 hour period. however over the last hour I stopped sweating and started cramping. I think this has to do with diminished electrolights. Now I know that potassium, sodium, chlorine are very important to water retention. I actually does all my water these days with mineral additives. http://translate.google.com/translate?langpair=auto|en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bodybuilding-depot.de%2Fshop%2FVitamine%2BMineralien%2FS.U.%2BMineral%2BComplex%2BSoftdrink .
I guess what I'm saying is that in general what you are saying is correct but an important factor is how are you losing the water and at what rate? I know that in warm desert climates salt tables are used as part of dehydration treatment. So I'm confused when you say people should reduce their salt intake, to increase water uptake.
I always had a sort of simple theory of this in mind. Basically water absorption happen through a sort of osmosis in the large intestine. To help this the blood needs to be more salty than the fluid in the intestine. So completely fresh water can be absorbed the best. however if you are sweating a lot this causes a lot of salts to be expelled from the body continually reducing the effectiveness of this process. Therefore over the longer term is is actually better to drink mineral infused or even slightly salty water to replenish these expelled salts.
So I'm curious would you agree with this or not?

Hello,
I just wanted to share my experience with a product made of Green Tea, Yerba Maté, and some botanicals.
It is called Sai'Tea. It is from Chile, and is just being sold here. This is truly all natural, nothing extracted, isolated, or added. It does not stimulate you central nervous system, or effect lipid uptake (no liver problems. In fact, the only caffein in it occurs naturally from the tea & maté.
It works 2 way, first it subtly curbs your hunger. Second, it drastically reduces the amount of food you need to feel full and satisfied. You simply feel full with less food. I have been able to eat about 1/2 to 2/3 of the food I normally eat. The best part is, I really don't miss it! No B.S. it really works! I think these guys may have found the perfect lifestyle modifier to loose weight, without going into cardiac arrest, or needing a liver transplant. I have been using it since December, without any exercise but walking 2-3 times a week, and have lost 28 lbs. Not the fastest weight loss, but slow and steady, and I can still have REAL food!
I found it at Herbs for Health in Salt Lake City, but I now order online from their website (as I no longer live there). There website is: www.saitea.com

@Cory, you didn't read the article did you?

"You’ll perform (3) 15-Minute “PR Zones” where you’ll attempt to accumulate as many total reps as possible and then improve upon that number every workout"

Sets of 5, back and forth between exercises, without rest for 15 minutes to accumulate AS MANY reps as possible.

Then on your next training session, beat it by at least 1 rep

@Karl, might I present to you, for your consideration, that it's the avoiding of fat's and the yolk that is keeping you from your goals? What if everything you've ever thought about food was wrong and is actually keeping you fat and or unhealthy?

consider eating the yolks, but start with 3 eggs instead of 6. Then simply account for the calories (not the fat) and eat less later.

Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, supper like a pauper.

Eat big in the am, and then progressively less through the day.

voila.. eat the eggs, increase your nutrition, lose weight, feel better.

ooohhh... and then improve the quality of the eggs.... ya... switch from store bought to farmers market bought. Better eggs have more nutrition. Store bought eggs are just like potato chips. They look like a food but aren't really.

the nutrition is IN THE YOLK, not the white.

@Karl, no dont use honey, use sugar. The sugar is for the scoby, not for you.

Making a scoby is tricky, and you'd still have to have the culture from somewhere anyway.

Yes, kombucha has naturally occurring alcohol, each batch is different so there's not "one answer" as to how much alcohol. NOt very much though. As for it hurting your gut, kombucha is ABOUT improving your gut's ability to handle food and anything else. My guess is that kombucha consumption over a regular basis would improve your entire health.

@Joseph, I'm not a doctor and do not give that sort of medical advice. What I can say is to follow the advice of your doctor and then look into increasing potassium and magnesium (from food sources would be my recommendation). Chia seed would fit the bill, and Hemp Hearts (shelled hemp seeds) would be great as well.

Sounds like (but I'm not the final say in the matter, your doctor is) an electrolyte issue. More than just potassium and magnesium.

@Tiffany, I've had many a cork blow from kombucha in wine bottles. Decided it just wasn't the right way to do it. Scared the crap out of my cats too (funny though).

at such a low pH AFTER brewing, it shouldn't be much to worry about. Beer isn't an acid so contamination could be a concern.

Contamination of Kombucha during the fermentation phase IS a concern. It would depend on how soon you caught the bottle after the cork blew (In my humble, but not expert opinion).

@Morgana, I use coconut flour in many places without eggs. My favorite is as a coating for liver. I put coconut flour, sea salt and fresh ground pepper into a zip lock bag and then use it to batter my liver.

I've done chicken the same way. No eggs. Just coconut flour and spices.

@Mir, sure, try egg subsitutes. The egg just helps the coconut flour bind. As for your egg allergies, my I suggest reading more about pasture raised eggs. I'm told by many a farmer of pasture raised eggs that their clients who've said they're allergic are NOT allergic to the pasture eggs. Just store bought eggs. They're completely different in many respects. I'd suggest you look into it AND find a local farmer who raises "pasture raised" eggs, not free range. Free range is a political joke and has nothing to do with health or ethics.

Oh yeah, I tried all sorts of crazy diets and none worked except for the keto one but I lost muscle and was deprived of vitamins so it wasn't worth it.

In the end, It was hard work that prevailed, a ton of heavy reps to deplete my glyco stores and then a ton of cardio.

That's awesome. being fat sucks big time, you're just in a dark place, it's depressing but it's nice to see that you lost all that fat.

I used to be 160 when I was 18, did a ton of weight training and was lean at 140. From then on, I decided to bulk up to gain muscle faster, I didn't do it very clean at all. Flashforward to 2 years, I went from a lean 140 to a huge 260 butterball. That was a big mistake, sure I gained muscle but I looked so fat. I was in denial until I took pictures of myself and It hit me like a knife through the heart. I decided to cut and I dropped to a lean 190 in a year, it felt soo good to be not only lean but huge too, Being fat was like commiting suicide.
