In Edmonton Driving CabI left the University of Saskatchewan for the sole purpose of becoming a cab driver. A short month after arriving in Edmonton, Alberta, I had my chauffeurs permit and started work. It was a great job. I found a group of guys who met at the coffee shop regularly three times a day. I would get up and go for breakfast, work 3 hours, go for dinner, work 3 hours and go for supper. I NEVER had my own food in my apartment. It was all restaurant food. When I went to McDonalds, I would order 2 Big Macs, 2 Fries and 2 Shakes! I think I broke the land speed record for the largest amount of weight gain in the shortest amount of time. I ballooned up to 475 in less than two years. I don't think I was unhappy at that weight. I had a lot of friends. I was working all the time and it was a new experience being in such a big city. I had two other friends who were just as big as I was. My day driver,Larry Atchison (the fellow who worked the opposite shift on the taxi) was at least 500lbs himself! The springs and shocks (and seat) on the left hand side of the car sure got a workout! Another fellow cab driver, Trevor O'Dell was over 400 too. Everyone does Drugs! One of the first things I learned when I moved to Edmonton was that EVERYONE smoked dope! I am not emphasizing for effect. Everyone seemed to smoke dope. No matter where you turned, or who you talked to, or who got in the cab, everyone smoked! I had kind of dabbled in it in Saskatoon, but not much. I got to the point of smoking 30 joints a day. No joke. The end of each day was a smoke marathon at someone's house. It was a daily thing. It started small at first, then worked its way up to 30 joints. |
