Food Combining

How Food Combining Started My Journey

I actually went to a grocery store and started buying food.I bought some whole wheat bread and some vegetables, which half of ended up as “fridge experiments” if you know what I mean. I had a buddy who had some experience with something called food combining. He noticed that I was buying whole wheat bread and was making sandwiches at home now and started dripping on me about food combining .He and I had known each other for a couple of years and we spent an enormous amount of time smoking dope together, so I was always in ear shot. He told me of a book called Fit For Life by Harvey and Marilynn Diamond. I was not a reader, but bought the book anyway. I quickly went on to learn about food combining and it's advantages.

I was immediately exposed to what food was all about and how our body supposedly used it. The idea is that one of the most energy demanding things our body does is the digestion of food. If we were to eat food in a different order and combined with other foods in a simple way, we could improve our digestion time and relieve our body of the burden of trying to digest food. We would save an huge amount of energy which would be used to clean out the guck and reduce our weight. Food combining is the idea is that starches require an alkaline digestion solution while protein requires an acid. Eating starches and proteins together causes the stomach to release both which any grade 10 chemistry student will tell you neutralizes each other. The stomach works and works and then finally gives up sending rotting, undigested food to your intestines. Vegetables can be digested in either alkaline or acid, so to simply remove a side dish from our main meal improves digestion and gives us a lot of energy back. Eating steak and vegetables without the potato, or chicken and vegetables without the rice would do the trick.

Food combining talks about the principle of proper fruit consumption, which I had never heard of before. The principle states that fruit requires no digestion and must be eaten on an empty stomach and then given 20 minutes to an hour to simply slide through the stomach. If eaten after a meal, it sits on top of the food, ferments and rots causing lots of harm. When eaten correctly, it is providing us with nutrients in minutes!

My buddy was a great mentor, and to have him making up vegetable sandwiches with me was a great help. When we would go out to a salad bar, we would give it a look over first, deciding if we were going to go protein or starch for the main meal.Then we would go get a plate of fruit and start with that. We would chat about whatever for about a half hour, then hit the salad bar again. My favorite was almost always bean salad, so I always did the protein thing.Salad, bean salad, brown beans and raw veggies with blue cheese dip, skipping the potato salad and rice dishes. Lots of times we would be there for two hours or more. My findings were that I would walk away absolutely stuffed, so much so that it hurt, but I had energy because I was food combining! I couldn’t bend over, but I was not about to fall asleep either! Hmmmmm.. what was this all about. These two feelings did not ever go together. Food combining works and it's a great way to jump start your digestion.
